Nigeria @ 66: Empowering Student Creators in the Digital Economy

Nigeria @ 66 Independence Losintech post

On October 1st, 1960, Nigeria laid the foundation for national self-determination. Sixty-six years later, the frontier of sovereignty has fundamentally shifted. True independence in the modern era is no longer decided solely by borders, treaties, or natural resources. It is defined by technological capability, indigenous innovation, and digital self-reliance.

Yet, a quiet paradox persists across our secondary schools and learning centers.

A Nigerian student can spend years in computer class, ace their exams, know every shortcut in Microsoft Word, and can use the browse the internet with a laptop but still freeze when asked:

“What can you actually build with technology?”

The issue isn’t a lack of intelligence or creativity. It’s that technology education across our classrooms is built around knowing, not doing. And even when practicals do occur, they are confined to academic sandboxes, completely disconnected from real-world problem environments.

Moving Beyond Consumerism

Young Nigerians are already immersed in technology. They navigate WhatsApp, TikTok, banking apps, and online platforms daily. But consuming technology isn’t the same as creating with it.

What if a student under the age of 18 could:

  • Build a functioning website for their school club?
  • Create an automated attendance tracker?
  • Design a playable game?
  • Use AI tools to turn an idea into a working prototype

That shift—from “What is this tool?” to “What can I build with it?”—changes everything. It’s the difference between being a passive digital consumer and an active problem solver.

Nobody Learned to Ride a Bicycle from a Textbook

Imagine teaching a child the physics, history, and safety rules of a bicycle, testing them on paper, but never letting them touch the handlebars. They might get an A on the exam, but the moment they sit on a bike, they fall.

Tech is no different.

Students need to experiment, break things, troubleshoot, and try again. The code will fail. The webpage won’t load. A student will inevitably look up and say: “Sir, it was working five minutes ago!” 😂

That isn’t failure; that’s engineering. When students debug their own mistakes, they develop something far more durable than memorization: the confidence to figure things out on their own.

Introducing The Doers’ Club Program

The Doers’ Club operates on one rule: Don’t just learn it. Build it.

Instead of reading about tech from a whiteboard, students take immediate action through real-world projects. They don’t just memorize definitions—they build, iterate, and ship. Once they master these practical skills, we match our learners directly with local SMEs. This allows students to step into the real world and use their newly acquired digital capabilities to solve actual business problems, proving that their skills have immediate market value.

The goal isn’t to force every child to become a software engineer or a designer. Digital capability is a multiplier for whatever they pursue:

  • A future doctor who can automate clinic records.
  • A future entrepreneur who can spin up their own online store.
  • A future teacher who can design interactive digital learning tools.

The classroom of the future doesn’t end the lesson with: “What did you learn today?”

It asks: “What problem did you solve?”

Ready to move from consuming to creating?
